The Merdeka Golf Tournament 2023 celebrated Malaysia’s Independence Day with over 70 golfers from around the UK, and took place at the scenic Essendon Country Club, at the end of August. High Commissioner of Malaysia Dato Zakri Jaafar welcomed distinguished guests, including Ambassador of Vietnam Hoang Long Nguyen, Ambassador of Thailand Thani Thongpahakdi, and Ambassador of the Lao PDR Douangmany Gnotsyoudom.

The Club’s lush fairways provided a scenic backdrop for the tournament, showcasing the outstanding sportsmanship of the participants. In his address, the High Commissioner explained the tournament was a way to promote friendship and camaraderie through the medium of sports, strengthening the bond within the Malaysian community in the UK and guests. The event also served as one of the platforms for the High Commission to foster stronger ties and a sense of patriotism among Malaysians in the UK, all while celebrating Malaysia’s 66th anniversary of Independence.

Trophies were presented in various categories, along with prizes including a unique experiences with Maserati, return tickets to Malaysia from Malaysia Airlines, a Brompton bike, and stays at prestigious properties including the Intercontinental Hotel and Royal Lancaster Hotel in London.
