A MISCELLANY OF INVENTIONS: NEW MENU AT GONG BAR

HONOURING THE MOST transformative inventions of human history, GŌNG Bar at Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London, the highest hotel bar in Western Europe, has launched a new cocktail menu entitled ‘A Miscellany of Inventions’. Inspired by the creativity of the greatest inventors of our past and developed through out-of-the-box techniques and by combining unusual ingredients, each drink is its own unique creation in a wondrously shaped receptacle. An idea served inside an idea.

Head Bartender Christian Maspes said: “It is hard to imagine the world we know today without screw drivers and computers, and movies and guitars. Creating a new invention is like taking a leap of faith and being open to the possibilities, and the same goes for the creation of a new cocktail. We really enjoyed bringing our ideas to life and we look forward to entertaining our guests with our unique creations.” Fifteen original creations include three zero-proof cocktails.

GONG COLA

The carbonated soft drink that became popular worldwide when pharmacist John Pemberton invented Coca-Cola in 1886 has inspired GŌNG Cola, a sweet and sparkling tonic with an oaky texture and coffee and caramel notes.

All ingredients are combined, carbonated and bottled in a cola bottle.

Ingredients:
Pisco Quebranta, Barolo Chinato, caramel, CO2, Rinomato Americano, Porter Beer, vermouth, Di Torino

LOOK NO HANDS

The first person to ‘get on their bike’ was Karl Von Drais in 1817 with his self-designed two-wheeled vehicle. However it had no pedals. Decades later, Scotsman Kirkpatrick Macmillan changed all that with his pedal bicycle innovation, which propelled him into the history books.

A robust aperitif, with bitter notes and candied orange, Look No Hands is served straight up in a Nick and Nora Tulip glass and garnished with a bamboo bicycle.

Ingredients:Copper Dog Whisky, Gagliardo Triple Sec, IPA Reduction, Fernet-Branca

THE CURE

Fleming discovered Penicillin after leaving a petri dish out before a two-week holiday. He returned to a mouldy dish, from which the first antibiotic was created.

A complex sweet and sour drink with smoky notes and a liquorice finish, The Cure is shaken and served with a stick of ice in a traditional apothecary bottle.

Ingredients:
Monkey 47, liquorice liqueur, citrus, salty timur, Kamm & Sons Aperitif, maple

OVER THE RAINBOW

The hot air balloon was the first successful human-carrying flight technology and was created by the Montgolfier brothers. The first untethered hot air balloon flight was manned by Jean-François Pilâtre de Rozier and François Laurent d’Arlandes in 1783 in France – for a whole ten minutes.

This sweet long drink with intense mandarin flavours and a creamy amaro pairing is served in a bespoke hot air balloon glass designed specifically for the drink. Served shaken and poured over ice, it is accompanied by a homemade shortbread biscuit and dipped in homemade Braulio curd.

Ingredients:
Martell VS Cognac, Palo Cortado Sherry, mandarin, pomegranate, lemon, Braulio curd

The new cocktail menu is available at GŌNG bar from 18 September 2018. Located at the pinnacle of Shangri-La Hotel, At The Shard, London, GŌNG Bar is quite a destination, serving a vast array of fine wines, spirits, cocktails and champagnes as well as sweeping views of London’s iconic skyline. It comprises two bars – a cocktail bar and a champagne bar, as well as an infinity Sky Pool Bar which opens on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights with a live DJ.
