TRAVEL: A new travel concept

Venetia van Kuffeler on two exciting British travel brands, Pelorus and Camp Kerala, who have come together to create luxurious tented camp experiences in remote UK destinations

Exceptional times call for exceptional measures.UK travel industry experts have been putting their heads together to work out the way forward. After all, tourism isn’t going to recover until potential travellers feel safe again. With diminished flight routes and less availability for the time being, we are likely to see a rise in interest in travelling closer to home, plus the desire for a special get together with friends and family after spending lengthy periods apart. A staycation provides the ultimate solution. And what could be more reassuring than an entirely bespoke trip in a camp built especially for you, in remote destination far away from the crowds?

Step in experiential travel specialists, Pelorus, and ‘glamping’ pioneers, Camp Kerala, who have joined forces to offer exclusive new experiences in remote parts of the UK, once domestic travel is viable again. This new partnership combines the best of adventure travel with the finest hospitality, as these two British brands bring together family, friends and colleagues in great comfort and privacy.

This, however, is not camping as you have ever known it before! Pelorus and Camp Kerala build every journey from scratch so that the camp will become a ‘home away from home’ where guests are welcomed as old friends, and the needs of each individual taken care of. A tailor-made programme of activities and experiences will be organised by Pelorus, be it fishing, off the beaten track walks with spectacular views, picnicking at a remote loch, foraging or wild swimming. Guests will return from these adventures to the signature Camp Kerala experience – beautifully designed maharaja tents with proper beds on hard wood floors, delicous dining (in-tent, if desired) and even a bar, all worthy of a five-star hotel.

The teams have put together a series of concepts in locations such as Dorset and Somerset, Yorkshire, Pembrokeshire and throughout Scotland, and guests can choose to either stay in one location or move between multiple camps. As every experience is bespoke, travellers can expect hiking along the Jurassic coastline, heading out on a RIB to fish before a coastal BBQ to cook the catch, paragliding over spectacular scenery or surfing off the Pembrokeshire coast. Expert guides are on hand for activities such as foraging, bird watching and survival skills.

Since inception in 2005, Camp Kerala has been the global leader in luxury camping. The company has effortlessly created a safe haven for guests to come together and enjoy exceptional experiences, pushing the boundaries of location, entertainment and service. Director of Camp Kerala Bert Broughton comments “2020 has brought a new challenge, but with Pelorus as our partners we are creating some ground-breaking experiences to look forward to. Our Camp Kerala brand provides guests with the opportunity to come together, spread joy and create memories in their own home away from home. There is something for everyone…”

Pelorus offers private adventures to the most awe-inspiring places on earth. Named after a marine navigation tool used in the golden era of exploration, Pelorus puts the emphasis on the experience at the heart of the trip, and this new partnership draws together this expertise with Camp Kerala’s high-end glamping accommodation to provide the finest UK holidays. Co-Founder Jimmy Carroll says, “Whether it is a celebratory occasion or a family adventure, Pelorus’ aim is to build something truly extraordinary in travel. There is so much of these isles not being seen – we aim to show people what is out there, with the finest accommodation, dining and service to come home to.”

This innovative venture will unlock exclusive experiences across the UK, which haven’t been accessible before. At a time when real wilderness is rare, Pelorus endeavours to bring the unimaginable to life, with Camp Kerala creating a seamless hospitality experience.
