LONDON’S BEST HOTEL SUITES: Corinthia Hotel London
With the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in April, Diplomat identifies London’s best hotel suites with the facilities to assist Heads of State and VIPs: Corinthia Hotel London has 45 suites that are perfect for high-level visits
Corinthia Hotel London, one of the capital’s finest luxury hotels, is housed within a building that has stood on Whitehall Place for over a century. Dating back to 1885, the grand Victorian building spent 50 years as the prestigious Hôtel Métropole before it was taken over by the government in 1936 and used as Ministry of Defence offices. For 70 years, many notable events took place within its walls. Churchill wrote of hearing Big Ben strike on Armistice Day, as he watched from a window as hundreds of Londoners poured on to the streets in celebration. The building recently underwent a meticulous restoration to return it to its former glory. Once again an epicentre for the worlds of politics, diplomacy, business and culture, and just a stone’s throw from Westminster and Downing Street, there’s never been a more appropriate place for VIPs and Heads of State to stay.
Corinthia London has preserved and respected many of the building’s original features, all while installing contemporary interiors and state-of-the-art technology to ensure that all modern requirements are met. Guests are greeted in the main lounge area by the spectacular ‘Full Moon’ chandelier produced by Baccarat, which is a promise of the great things in the hotel to come.
The 250-plus rooms include 45 luxurious suites: Trafalgar Suites, River Suites, Junior Suites and so on. Of the nine penthouses, some are located over two storeys, inside historic turrets, and feature private lifts and terraces. The aptly named Whitehall Suite, for example, has a private internal lift that leads to a penthouse retreat designed for guests who habitually wield power and influence. Ideal for great statesmen, the suite houses a cigar humidor, a curved two-metre-long leather-topped desk and high-tech communication system, plus an oak-paneled lounge and study with the genteel elegance of a refined gentlemen’s club. Outside, on the private terrace with views towards Whitehall and Big Ben, a giant chess set provides a diversion from the affairs of state or business.
At over 470m2, the Royal Suite can be connected to adjacent rooms to provide additional accommodation. From these suites and their private terraces, Corinthia guests enjoy unmatched views across some of London’s most recognised landmarks, including the Thames, the London Eye, Trafalgar Square and Whitehall. Corinthia London’s individual bedrooms, averaging 45m2 in size, are also amongst the largest in their category in London’s luxury hotel market.
The magnificent Victorian Ballroom has played host to many national day celebrations, plus there are two restaurants, the largest spa in Europe, a cocktail bar, and plenty of boardroom meeting facilities. Corinthia Hotel London is truly fit for a king.
